Spotted sunfish are one the smaller members of the sunfish family. Individuals typically weigh less than 8 ounces.

Adult fish are usually dark olive or brown above, with light green or olive sides. Their flanks display a pattern of small black spots. Their dusky orange fins are a distinguishing feature.

Spotted sunfish are often called “stumpknocker” because they orient strongly to stumps where they find food. They prefer heavily vegetated, slow-moving lowland streams and warm shallow ponds.

Despite their small size, spotted sunfish are sought after by anglers. They are aggressive feeders and readily attack small artificial lures, live baits, or other offerings.
