largemouth bass

The Florida bass is a recently recognized species of black bass. Florida bass, sometimes known as “Florida strain bass” are generally larger, but nearly identical in appearance to largemouth bass.

The Florida bass is officially recognized by the American Fisheries Society (AFS) as a separate species from largemouth bass, following a genetic study by Yale University. Previously, two subspecies of largemouth bass (LMB) were recognized: Florida and northern.

In 2023, the American Fisheries Society published an updated list of common and scientific names of fishes. The 2023 list includes a change in the name of Florida bass were renamed from Micropterus floridanus to Micropterus salmoides.
