Ohio’s public lakes and reservoirs are excellent places to fish for bass, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.
Located in Northwestern Ohio, Clear Fork Reservoir is one of the best locations in the state for largemouth bass. Division of Wildlife sampling surveys consistently show an abundance of bass longer than 20 inches in the impoundment.
In the shallow western end of the lake, anglers target bass among fallen trees and stumps. In spring, casting along the eastern end near the dam can produce larger fish.
The reservoir features a multi-lane concrete boat launch ramp as well as a full-service marina. Clear Fork Reservoir is an unlimited horsepower lake with an 8 mph speed limit.
In Northeastern Ohio, Leesville Lake is surrounded by the beautiful, wooded hills of Carroll County. Leesville Lake offers anglers a quiet escape with limited shoreline development and forested scenery.
Leesville Lake is home to a fantastic bass population. Recent creel surveys indicated that nearly one-third of anglers fishing the waters of Leesville targeted bass, and their catch rates were excellent. Anglers averaged catching just over one bass per hour of fishing, well above the statewide average of three hours for each bass caught.
Electrofishing surveys consistently show an above-average abundance of largemouth bass and good numbers of large fish. Leesville Lake is also home to a well-known for its muskellunge fishery.
With a 10-horsepower limit and multiple access points, Leesville Lake is an ideal destination for bass anglers seeking big-fish potential in a peaceful, low-traffic setting.
In Central Ohio, Alum Creek Lake continues to be a top bass-producing lake. Fisheries surveys show that fish are plentiful and large. This has translated into impressive tournament bag weights that push 20 pounds for five fish.
Largemouth bass can be caught around the abundant weed beds in 3 to 10 feet of water, mostly in the middle and lower basins of the reservoir. Smallmouth bass are often targeted near offshore points and rocky areas.
With 3,330 acres of water, five boat ramps, a full-service marina, and easy access and amenities from the surrounding state park, Alum Creek is perfectly suited to deliver a fantastic fishing experience.
In Southwestern Ohio, Rocky Fork Lake offers the region’s best combination of large and abundant largemouth bass. The lake offers optimal habitat for bass with a great combination of aquatic vegetation, submerged timber, and coves and bays.
Survey results from the spring of 2026 found historically high catch rates, with many bass in the 3- to 5-pound range, however a few topped the scales near 6 pounds. Not surprisingly, this is a favorite tournament destination for bass anglers.
Boat anglers can choose from one of the lake’s six boat ramps, such as the newly constructed Rocky Fork East Shore Marina Boat Ramp. Shore anglers have abundant public access around each of the boat ramps and near the east end of the lake, and two fully accessible fishing piers are available.
The Great Miami River provides some of the best smallmouth fishing in the state. Recent smallmouth surveys on the Great Miami River show higher abundance in the upper part of the river but larger fish in the stretches south of Dayton.
Fish in the 18- to 20-inch range are not uncommon. The river produced the highest number of reported Fish Ohio (larger than 18 inches) smallmouth bass of any waterway in 2025.
Fishing can be especially good below any of the seven lowhead dams between Dayton and Hamilton. Shore access is available through Five Rivers Metroparks, the Miami Conservancy District, and many towns and parks along the river.
In Southeastern Ohio, Appalachian Hills Wildlife Area is Ohio’s largest wildlife area. Within the areas are hundreds of ponds and lakes, making it a great location to seek the bass of a lifetime. Kayak, float tube, and shore fishing are the best ways to explore this area.
Among the most popular lakes are those along A-C Hull Road, Rural Dale Road, and the equine trailhead road. Most of the ponds and lakes have thriving bass populations, although dedicated anglers seeking trophy-sized bass should venture to waters farther from the main roads.
Anglers fish close to cover in muddy water, especially after a strong cold front. Dark-colored baits work well in the spring, and lighter colors are better in late summer and into the fall.
Improved concrete boat ramps, gravel ramps, and kayak and canoe launches are available at select ponds. Details about these access points can be found in the Interactive Ohio Lake Fishing Map.
