A number of events were held along the Hudson River in New York, in celebration of Hudson River Day 2012. The celebration focused on the five themes of the 2010-14 Hudson River Estuary Action Agenda: Clean Water, Habitat, River Access, Climate Change and Scenery.
A new feature of Hudson River Day 2012 was the Great Hudson River Fish Count. At numerous sites, naturalists used seine nets to capture live fish from the Hudson. The results will be shared between sites throughout the day to see how many of the Hudson’s fish species can be found.
According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, The Hudson River Watershed sustains more than 200 species of fish, including several species that migrate up the river and its tributaries each spring to spawn.
