The longnose gar is a primitive of species of fish found in brackish rivers, creeks, and swamps.
Longnose gar have a long, cylindrical body which is covered with tough scales. Their bony mouths and rows of large, sharp teeth makes the species difficult to catch with hook and line.
Longnose gar feed on minnows, shiners, sunfish, perch, and other small fish. They often ambush prey by lying still near the water’s surface and feeding on small fish as they are swept by.
A variety of methods have been developed to catch longnose gar. In some areas, anglers use a snare rig with live bait in the middle. When gar take the bait, the snare tightens around the gar’s mouth.
